Water Footprint Assessment - Tomato Supply Chain 08/2013 – 12/2013, UK, NL / World-wide, Unilever

Main project features: Unilever has a sustainable living plan in  which it analyses its global product portfolio for sustainability  impacts. This time they were looking at their tomato supply chain  as they have many tomato-based products. The water footprint  of tomato production was the focus as that is a large component  of their sustainability impact.   Activities performed: Conducted Water Footprint Assessments  using data from Unilever’s global tomato supply chain. This  involved geospatial analyses, modelling, calculations, reporting  and developing strategies and water scarcity maps for Unilever  so they might understand their risks in the supply chain. I also  identified and prioritized risk river basins where the tomato  growers operate as well as analysed their efficiency of production  to lend focus to problematic areas – a hotspot analysis. This involved evaluating agro data from over 1000 farms across 3 Indian states over 2 years. This was a significant study which conclusively determined the benefits of organic and hybrid cotton cultivation as it relates to improved livelihoods and sustainability impact. The study showed conventional cotton with its chain of pollution to be the least sustainable. This enabled the client to make a strategic decision about their cotton supply chain in the fashion world. Activities performed: project management, team lead hydrological analyses, water footprint assessment, modelling, reporting, data collection, quality control, client engagement – the entire life cycle of the project to publishing. GIS work, scripting in Python with researchers from the University of Twente. First time grey water footprint guidelines level 2 were applied for water pollution and runoff.
